The recent surge of cyberattacks against the governments of Hamas and Israel in response to their ongoing war highlights the ethical and legal issues surrounding hacktivism in conflicts.
One of the key ethical dilemmas in hacktivism is the concept of “justifiable means.”
While hacktivists may argue that their cyberattacks are a means of raising awareness and influencing public opinion, it raises the question of whether the end justifies the means. Should individuals take matters into their own hands and engage in unauthorized activities, even if their intentions are noble? Or does this kind of vigilante action set a dangerous precedent?
Laws differ from country to country, making it difficult to define the boundaries of what constitutes a legal or illegal act.
